Introduction

White Dew (Báilù) is the fifteenth solar term, occurring around September 7–9 when the sun reaches 165°. The name describes how falling nighttime temperatures cause morning dew to form as white droplets on leaves and grass. Classical texts explain: "Metal is white in autumn — the white-colored dew is a sign that cold is beginning." White Dew marks the true arrival of autumn with noticeably lower temperatures.

Climate in Taiwan

Around Báilù, mountain areas and high elevations in northern Taiwan see clear morning dew forming. Plains temperatures average 25–30°C, but day-night temperature differences can exceed 10°C. Typhoon activity decreases significantly. The sky becomes clearer and travel conditions improve — White Dew signals the beginning of Taiwan's golden autumn travel season, with rice fields across the island turning brilliant gold.

White Dew Tea & Seasonal Produce

White Dew is prime season for autumn tea (báilù chá) — tea leaves that have grown through the entire summer develop rich amino acids, producing a mellow and full-bodied cup. Longan season draws to a close, while grapes and persimmons begin to come into season. Taiwan's autumn fruit bounty grows in abundance around White Dew, marking a shift in market produce.

Wellness

White Dew calls for nourishing the kidneys and warming the body against the cold. The combination of autumn dryness and large day-night temperature swings increases risk of respiratory illness. Eat nourishing foods — yam, lotus seeds, walnuts, and black sesame. The folk saying "Don't bare skin after White Dew" is a reminder to cover up: stop wearing shorts and short sleeves, especially protecting the abdomen and feet from drafts.
