Introduction
Major Snow (Dàxuě) is the twenty-first solar term, occurring around December 6–8 when the sun reaches 255°. "Major Snow" means more abundant snowfall and deeper cold. The farming proverb "Major Snow heralds a bountiful year" reflects the agricultural importance of winter snow: a blanket of snow insulates farmland, kills pests, maintains soil temperature, and provides spring meltwater.
Climate in Taiwan
Snow in Taiwan's lowlands during Major Snow is virtually impossible, but Hehuanshan and Yushan frequently accumulate snow at this time — the prime season for Taiwanese to head to the mountains for a snow experience. Northern plains temperatures average 8–16°C; the south 10–20°C. As the year-end approaches, temple fairs and New Year activities around Taiwan ramp up in energy and festivity.
Winter Foods & Nourishment
Major Snow is the height of Taiwan's tonic season; hot pot is the preferred winter dining experience — spicy hotpot, ginger duck, and lamb hot pot are winter restaurant specialties across the island. Sugar cane harvesting peaks around Major Snow in southern Taiwan, with fresh sugar cane juice everywhere. Winter melon, white radish, and cabbage are the season's representative vegetables for stewing and hot pot.
Wellness
Major Snow wellness centers on protecting yang energy and strengthening bones. Dress warmly to keep cold from penetrating. Soak your feet in warm water before bed (with ginger slices or mugwort) to boost circulation and warm the extremities. Eat yang-warming foods: walnuts, lamb, chives, and ginger. Avoid drinking too much cold water, which can strain the stomach. As year-end stress builds, consciously unwind and keep a cheerful mindset.
