Introduction
Grain Rain (Gǔyǔ) is the sixth and final solar term of spring, occurring around April 19–21 when the sun reaches 30°. "Gǔ yǔ" means "rain that nourishes grain" — abundant rainfall supports the growing season. After Grain Rain, spring gives way to summer and temperatures rise further into the year's warmest months.
Climate & Agriculture
Around Grain Rain, Taiwan's rainfall increases and temperatures reach 20–28°C — the last pleasantly cool days before summer heat. This is the critical window for rice transplanting and vegetable planting. Tea picked between Qingming and Grain Rain is called "spring tea" (chūnchá) and is of the finest quality, with tea picked on the Grain Rain date itself especially prized.
Traditional Customs
Grain Rain has a tradition of "walking Grain Rain" (zǒu Gǔyǔ) — going for a walk to strengthen the body and dispel illness. This is also prime season for harvesting spring wild herbs and medicinal plants, said to be most potent at this time. Grain Rain marks the start of the fishing season, with fishermen setting out for abundant catches in Taiwan's coastal waters.
Wellness
Grain Rain is the seasonal transition from spring to summer — protect the digestive system and prevent moisture-related illness. As humidity rises with the coming season, dampness can cause skin problems and digestive upset. Eat spleen-strengthening, dampness-draining foods: coix seeds, winter melon, and flat beans. Seafood is at its finest during Grain Rain but consume in moderation if you are prone to allergies.
