Introduction
Rain Water (Yǔshuǐ) is the second solar term, falling around February 18–20 when the sun reaches 330°. The term signals that precipitation shifts from snow to rain and rainfall gradually increases. Classical texts note: "When wood begins to grow in spring, it needs water — hence Rain Water follows Start of Spring."
Climate in Taiwan
Around Rain Water, northern Taiwan enters its spring rainy season with more overcast days and rising humidity, averaging 12–20°C. The south remains relatively sunny. This is the critical preparation period for spring planting, with farmers beginning to till fields and apply fertilizer ahead of the busy growing season.
Agricultural Significance
Rain Water is vital for agriculture; the proverb "Rain Water brings rain, the year brings plenty" reflects its importance to the harvest. Peach and plum blossoms begin to open, and spring farming ramps up. In Taiwan, southern rice farmers start early sowing while northern farmers begin seedling preparations in nurseries.
Wellness
The damp, heavy air calls for strengthening the spleen and draining dampness. Eat spleen-fortifying foods such as coix seeds (yì rén), yam, red beans, and poria mushroom. Avoid raw or cold foods that strain the spleen and digestive system. Keep the home ventilated and bedding dry to prevent moisture buildup that can cause joint pain and sluggishness.
