Introduction
End of Heat (Chǔshǔ) is the fourteenth solar term, occurring around August 22–24 when the sun reaches 150°. "Chǔ" means to stop or retreat — Chǔshǔ means "summer heat ceases." Classical texts say: "Chǔ, meaning to stop: the summer heat stops here." End of Heat is the pivotal turning point between summer and autumn as scorching weather begins to give way to refreshing coolness.
Climate in Taiwan
Around Chǔshǔ, mountain areas in northern Taiwan begin to feel cool in the early morning, while plains temperatures remain 28–33°C. Typhoon threats persist through October. The sky takes on the brilliant blue clarity associated with autumn — high and vast with white clouds, the "crisp autumn sky" that Taiwanese associate with the most beautiful time of year.
Ghost Festival Connection
Chǔshǔ falls during the 7th lunar month — Taiwan's Ghost Month. The end of the month marks the closing of the underworld gates, with final pudu ceremonies reaching their climax across the island. The slightly cooler, reflective atmosphere of late summer's End of Heat aligns fittingly with the introspective mood of Ghost Month. After Chǔshǔ, rural farmers begin preparing for the autumn harvest.
Wellness
End of Heat wellness focuses on nourishing yin and preventing autumn dryness. As autumn arrives, the air becomes drier and "autumn dryness" can cause chapped lips, dry skin, and coughs. Eat moistening foods: pears, white wood ear, lily bulb, lotus root, honey, and sesame. Reduce spicy and drying foods. Drink plenty of water and maintain home humidity. Gentle outdoor activities in the cool autumn air are beneficial.
